Intersections: Science Fiction, Fairy Tales, and Myth


Registration for Intersections: Science Fiction, Fairy Tales and Myth is now OPEN. Time and day for workshops will be determined according to participant availability. The course will begin mid-February and run through the first week of May.

The Storied Imaginarium has been running online generative writing workshops since 2016 and now has participants from destinations worldwide. Writers have published stories from workshops in a wide array of anthologies and magazines including Apex Magazine, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Clarkesworld, Daily Science Fiction, Escape Pod, Fantasy Magazine, Mermaids Monthly, and PULP Literature. Our flexible program and synchronous remote format makes it possible for writers to connect from different countries working across multiple time zones, which creates an engaging and exciting community!

THE SEASON OF THE HARE workshop is twelve weeks long and includes five modules. Participants are encouraged to write a poem, short story, or essay (3K maximum word count) for each module. Alternating weeks are dedicated to study, discussion, and writing prompts. At the end of the course, writers will present one revision (5K maximum word count). The price to join THE SEASON OF THE HARE is $500 with a 10% discount for returning participants.

There is a $100 non-refundable deposit required to hold your spot with payment in FULL prior to the first class. Returning students receive a 10% discount. Space is limited. Workshops are capped at six participants per group (plus facilitator!)

This series of interactive and generative workshops offers and opportunity to explore fairy tales and other traditional tales, paired with strange and marvelous concepts. You’ll have an opportunity to workshop five new stories or poems, and a portfolio piece you’ve revised based on the workshop discussions. This is a supportive and generative workshop that combines reading, discussion, writing, and feedback.

Week 7 (3/28-4/3): Discussion of Module 4 reading material & prompts

Week 8 (4/4-4/10): Module 4 Story Workshop

Week 11 (4/25-5/1): Revision & Submission Strategies

Note: In the past, workshops have traditionally been held mid-morning or early afternoon on Tuesday or Wednesday. Evening sessions usually occur on either Wednesday or Thursday. However, we work diligently to create a schedule that is feasible for all participants. (It just takes a little negotiation and wrangling of time zones.)

For example: Participant A lives in New York, participant B lives in Florida, participant C lives in Illinois, participant D lives in Colorado, and participant E lives in Australia. The U.S.-based writers work day jobs and need an evening course on a Thursday. The Australian writer is flexible (since they are in the southern hemisphere, they will be a day ahead). In this case, the schedule might look like this: 5:30-8 pm Thursday (MST), 6:30-9 pm Thursday (CST); 7:30-10 pm Thursday (EST); 11:30 am-2 pm (AEDT) Friday.

Another example: Participant A lives in Denmark and participant B lives in London. Both need an evening course. Participant C lives in British Columbia and participant D lives in Oregon. Both are available for day sessions. Participant E lives in Colorado and has a flexible schedule. All of the participants are in the northern hemisphere, and they have agreed on Tuesday as the best day. In this case, the schedule might look like this: 10 am-12:30 pm (PST); 11 am-1:30 pm (MST); 5-7:30 pm (GMT); 6-8:30 pm (CET).

It might seem like a lot, but I’ve been juggling time zones for five years. Once I know participant availability, I start matching up schedules. It’s a process, but it always works out.
